About Us

Adam Health is redefining men’s health and wellness with innovative, user-centered solutions that empower individuals to take proactive control of their health. This includes wearable technology, a partner app, and a supplement. With early traction, a successful seed round, and a bold mission to lead an industry shift, we’re poised to become a defining player in the men’s health and wellness space.

Position Summary

We are hiring our first in-house Lead Sotware Engineer. This is a senior, hands-on technical role. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of our backend system, working with an agency that has built the initial system. This includes a website, a partner app for a wearable device and a backend system for analysing and processing results. You will primarily manage the cloud infrastructure and the server that are central to our product and provides significant opportunity for future development with high value proprietary data.

Why Join Us Now?

As the first in-house engineering lead, you will be joining at a pivotal moment. This is an opportunity for the right person that's looking for a new deep challenge with entrepreneurs. You will have the unique opportunity to shape our technical foundations and establish best practices before the base code becomes more complex.

Primary Responsibilities (What you will do)

  • Review the current set up and develop and execute the long-term strategy for engineering.
  • Work closely with Product, Design and Data teams to provide high impact solutions.
  • Design, write, and deploy backend services.
  • Manage and optimise our cloud infrastructure and databases.
  • Work with the hybrid engineering team on App and Website development.
  • Oversee user identity management and authentication
  • Maintain and enhance the system's security architecture, balancing speed of development with protecting sensitive health data.
  • Collaborate with product and data teams to assess and implement AI automation solutions, enabling data analysis that provides personalised responses to users.

Technical Environment (The tools and systems involved)

Your primary focus will be on the core backend stack which is currently:

  • Languages: Java, with the Spring Boot framework
  • Database: PostgreSQL, managed via Amazon RDS
  • Cloud: Amazon AWS Infrastructure, specifically:
  • Deployment: Amazon Elastic Beanstalk
  • Identity: Amazon Cognito
  • Storage: Amazon S3
  • Security: Amazon VPC and bastion host architecture

You will be required to interact with systems built using:

  • An admin platform front-end built with Angular
  • Native mobile applications for Android (Kotlin) and iOS (Swift)
  • Analytics services using Google Analytics for Firebase and Google BigQuery
  • A Shopify e-commerce platform

Required Skills & Experience (What you need to have)

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional work experience including start ups or scale ups.
  • Demonstrable depth of experience that allows you to know the pros and cons of different technical solutions.
  • Advanced proficiency in backend development including Java and the Spring Boot framework.
  • Demonstrable, in-depth experience building and managing infrastructure on AWS and/or GCP.
  • Strong knowledge of database design and management.
  • The ability to work autonomously, manage your own project priorities, and solve complex problems logically.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Shopify
  • Experience of native app development iOS and/or Android.
  • Experience of using/building AI data analysis automations.
  • Familiar with Python for analytics to enable integration.

Why not to apply:

We know how much effort can go into applying for a role and we don’t want you to waste time if you don’t have to. These are reasons not to apply.

  • You are based overseas. This is a role for UK residents only.
  • You are not comfortable with ambiguity. There is always lots going on in start ups, you can’t do everything so it’s about being comfortable focusing on what is important to achieve the next goal.
  • You like focussing on a niche.  This is a role where you will have oversight or be doing a number of different things.
  • You are wedded to one tech stack.  If you have fixed views of the perfect tech stack this is not for you. Knowing what to apply and when, depending on the context is important.
  • You are a manager not a doer. Whilst you need to be comfortable working with others and managing work this is primarily an individual contributor (IC) role for now.

Career Growth & Impact

This role is designed to evolve as the company and team expand. You will be instrumental in building the future engineering department at Adam Health.

Work Environment & Logistics

  • Location: This is a fully remote position for residents of the UK. No sponsorship is available.
  • Communication: Our primary method of communication is asynchronous through tools that support focused work such as G-Suite and Notion.
  • Meetings: In-person meetings are scheduled 1-2 times per month for specific, objective-based collaboration. These meetings are typically held in London, and all travel expenses will be covered.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: Determined by your level of experience.
  • Equity: Meaningful share options package, allowing you to share directly in our success.
  • Benefits: Pension scheme and a holiday allowance of 25 vacation days with more benefits in the process of being added as the business grows.

Application Process

To apply, please submit your CV. A cover letter is optional but preferred to help us understand why you want to work for Adam Health, why this role and why now. It’s ok to use AI to help, proficiency in AI is encouraged, but the usual caveats apply of taking the time to check and tailor it.
