About the role

Lead Product Designer – UI/UX, AI & Rapid Prototyping

MEDirect | Australia Wide | Fully Remote

Want to design, prototype and help shape what the product becomes?

We’re looking for a hands-on Lead Product Designer with strong UI/UX capability, excellent rapid-prototyping skills, solid product instincts and the technical confidence to work closely with engineers.

You’ll work directly with MEDirect’s Founders and Head of Engineering — helping turn emerging ideas into user journeys and prototypes, iterating quickly, contributing to product scope and then staying close to the development team as those ideas become working software.

Your immediate focus will be Report Studio — an important new MEDirect product where we’re rethinking the experience around complex medicolegal reporting workflows.

This isn’t a role where you’ll be handed finished requirements and asked to make them look good.

You’ll be involved while the product itself is still being worked out.

About MEDirect

MEDirect is an Australian medicolegal technology company operating at the intersection of healthcare, law and technology.

We’re investing heavily in product, AI and technology to simplify complex medico-legal workflows and create better experiences for medical experts, referrers and our internal teams.

We’re looking for someone who wants to be close to the problem, close to the people shaping the product and close to the engineers building it.

Rapid prototyping is core to how you’ll work

A significant part of the role will be prototyping directly with our Founders.

The starting point might be a customer problem, an existing workflow, an early product idea or something that simply needs to be made tangible.

You’ll help move it rapidly through:

idea → journey → prototype → feedback → iteration

You’ll use the right level of fidelity for the problem — from early UX concepts through to high-fidelity interactive or lightweight coded prototypes.

The goal isn’t to create perfect prototypes.

It’s to learn quickly, remove ambiguity and get to the right product faster.

UI/UX is at the heart of the role

You’ll be responsible for turning complex workflows into experiences that feel simple, intuitive and coherent.

You’ll:

  • design end-to-end user journeys and workflows;
  • create high-quality UI and interaction designs;
  • turn ambiguity into clear and usable product experiences;
  • challenge unnecessary complexity;
  • design across different users, states, permissions and edge cases;
  • refine and extend our existing MEDirect design system;
  • and maintain the quality of the experience as it moves through development.

We’re not looking for someone who simply produces polished screens.

We want someone who thinks deeply about how the product should work.

You’ll have strong product instincts

Product thinking is an important extension of the role.

You’ll work with the Founders and Head of Engineering as scope progressively develops, helping to:

  • clarify the problem we’re solving;
  • understand the intended user and business outcome;
  • challenge assumptions;
  • explore alternative approaches;
  • identify gaps and edge cases;
  • use prototypes to answer product questions;
  • distinguish what belongs in the current iteration from what can come later;
  • and contribute to product requirements and acceptance criteria.

You won’t independently own MEDirect’s product roadmap or strategy.

But you’ll be inside the conversation where the product is being shaped.

You’ll work closely with engineering

You’ll report directly to our Head of Engineering Pri and work alongside developers throughout implementation.

You should be comfortable moving between:

Founder conversation → product thinking → user journey → Figma → prototype → engineering discussion → working software

You don’t need to be a production software engineer, but you should be technically fluent enough to engage confidently around concepts such as:

  • APIs and data flows;
  • application states;
  • user roles and permissions;
  • component-based front ends;
  • workflow logic;
  • reusable components;
  • implementation trade-offs;
  • and AI-enabled interactions.

We’d also expect you to be comfortable using modern AI-assisted design, coding and prototyping tools to accelerate the way you work.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone with strong capability across:

  • UI/UX and interaction design;
  • rapid prototyping;
  • product thinking and product definition;
  • complex workflow design;
  • technical product fluency;
  • collaboration with developers;
  • usability testing and iterative design;
  • design-system refinement;
  • and AI-assisted product design and prototyping.

You might currently be a Product Designer, Lead Product Designer, Principal Product Designer, Technical Product Designer or Design Engineer.

We care much more about what you can do than what your current title says.

What we want to see

Your portfolio matters.

We’d particularly like to see examples where you can take us through:

the problem → your product thinking → the UX → the prototype → what changed through iteration → how you worked with engineering → what shipped

If your portfolio is primarily polished finished screens, this probably isn’t the role.

If you love taking something complex or incomplete and turning it into something clear, usable, technically credible and buildable, it probably is.

Why this role is different

You’ll be involved early.

You’ll prototype directly with the Founders, help shape the product as it develops, work with the Head of Engineering as scope and technical feasibility evolve, and stay close to developers throughout implementation.

With Report Studio as your immediate focus, you’ll have the opportunity to help shape a significant product from early thinking and rapid prototyping through to real-world use.

Interested?

Send us your CV and, importantly, your portfolio.

We want to see the work you’re proud of — especially where you’ve helped take a complex idea from:

product problem → prototype → working product
