Senior Product Designer (Design Systems)

• Length: Initial 3 months (potential to extend, budget permitting)
• Start: Early January
• Rate: £475-£500 per day (Outside IR35)
• Location: Remote-friendly (UK-based team)

We’re looking for a contract Product / Design Systems Designer to join a large, enterprise-scale product team on an initial 3-month engagement, starting in early January.

This role is focused on working with and evolving a Material UI–based design system, helping the team get the most out of it while maintaining a high bar for design craft and usability.

The context

The team is mid-pivot from a fully custom headless design system to Material UI as the foundational framework. While Material UI will provide much of the core structure, there is still meaningful work to do around theming, extension, and ensuring the system supports complex, real-world product needs across multiple products.

This is very much a hands-on, delivery-focused role, supporting an established team through a period of change and ensuring continuity of knowledge and quality.

What you’ll be doing

• Working hands-on with Material UI as the core design system framework
• Theming, extending and adapting Material UI to fit product and brand needs
• Collaborating closely with designers, engineers and product partners
• Supporting and evolving a design system used across multiple enterprise-scale products
• Applying strong design craft to ensure usability, consistency and scalability
• Helping the team transition smoothly during a period of change

What we’re looking for

• Strong experience working with Material UI (or Material Design–based systems)
• Proven background in design systems within large, complex or enterprise environments
• Solid design craft skills – this is not just a systems-only role
• Experience working closely with engineering teams on implementation
• Comfortable joining a team mid-stream and adding value quickly
• Pragmatic, collaborative and delivery-oriented
