Google has officially introduced Material Three Expressive, a bold new design language for Android, marking a significant evolution from the Material You introduced with Android 12. This update brings springy animations, bold fonts, and vibrant colors to the forefront, aiming to make the UI more dynamic and engaging.
Key Features of Material Three Expressive
- Live Updates: A feature inspired by Apple’s Live Activities, now available for food delivery, navigation, and rideshare apps, displaying time-sensitive updates in a persistent notification bar.
- Customizable Quick Settings: Users can now resize and rearrange tiles, offering a more personalized experience.
- New Design Elements: App designers have access to new icon shapes, type styles, and color palettes, with animations designed to feel more "springy."

Google emphasizes that these changes are not just cosmetic but are intended to guide users’ attention more effectively. The design particularly targets a younger demographic, with bright purples and pinks featured prominently in concept images.
Despite these efforts, Google faces the challenge of competing with iPhone’s strong appeal among teenagers, especially in the US. The company cites research suggesting that 87% of 18–24-year-olds prefer expressive designs like Material Three Expressive.
