Apple is reportedly planning a major new design for iOS 19, which is said to be the biggest revamp since iOS 7. While specific details are scarce, recent developments in iPhone apps offer intriguing hints about the upcoming changes. Here’s what we’ve gathered.
Five New Apps and One Big Redesign Provide Major iOS 19 Clues
Apple hasn't undertaken a significant redesign for iOS since 2013 with iOS 7. Over the past twelve years, refinements have been made, yet the iOS interface has remained largely unchanged.
Recent apps developed by Apple provide essential clues about the new design direction for iOS 19. Here are the last five major apps Apple has built from the ground up:
These apps showcase a variety of distinct design elements, but they also exhibit common traits that hint at potential changes in iOS 19.
iPhone Tab Bars Are on Their Way Out
Historically, tab bars have been a staple of iOS design since the first iPhone. However, Apple is moving away from this traditional navigation style. New apps like Journal, Sports, and Invites have replaced tab bars with hidden navigation options located near the header, suggesting a shift towards a more streamlined, single-page design.
More Commonalities of Recent Apple Apps
Subtle design clues in Apple’s latest apps indicate a shift towards a new design language. As noted by Parker Ortolani, recent apps such as Apple Sports and Apple Invites feature elements resembling those in visionOS, including colorful backgrounds and glassy UI components. This suggests that iOS 19 may adopt a design philosophy that echoes the aesthetics of Apple's other operating systems.
The anticipation for iOS 19 is building, and with it, the potential for a significant visual refresh that could redefine the user experience on iPhones. What features are you hoping to see in the new design? Share your thoughts in the comments!
