Discover the Innovative Burl Treehouse: A Sustainable Floating Retreat in the Forest

Experience Nature Like Never Before with the Burl Treehouse
UK-based architectural designer Antony Gibbon has unveiled a stunning new concept: the Burl Treehouse. This unique series of rounded treehouse pods offers guests an exceptional way to immerse themselves in nature while prioritizing sustainability.

Currently in the conceptual stage, the Burl Treehouse features a minimalistic design that draws inspiration from the natural shapes of tree burls—those rounded, textured growths on tree trunks. This pod-like floating structure blends seamlessly with its forest environment, supported by a combination of slender vertical stilts and suspension cables anchored to nearby trees, minimizing disruption to the forest floor and creating a light, floating appearance. Access to each pod is provided via timber suspension bridges.
Design Features
The interior of the Burl Treehouse boasts light-toned cedar and ash wood, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The exterior is clad with charred wood shingles, employing the traditional Japanese technique of shou sugi ban, enhancing durability and adding an eye-catching aesthetic. Each pod includes:
- A cozy bedroom with built-in storage
- A compact bathroom with a shower
- Interior furnishings designed for efficient space use
A central circular window serves as the cabin's focal point, flooding the interior with natural light and offering stunning views of the surrounding forest.

Considerations
While the Burl Treehouse design is visionary, it raises practical questions about performance in extreme weather and the long-term strain on the trees used for structural support. Despite these concerns, the concept holds great potential as an eco-tourism retreat or an innovative model for future residential or commercial projects.
