Discover the Innovative UK Pavilion Design Inspired by Ada Lovelace for Osaka Expo 2025

London studio Woo Architects has unveiled an updated design for the UK Pavilion at the Expo 2025 Osaka, now celebrating the groundbreaking innovations of Ada Lovelace, recognized as the world's first computer programmer.
Design Features
The pavilion will feature perforated aluminium panels that mimic punched cards, historically used for data input in computers. This new design replaces a previous, simpler concept that focused on digital screens and circular economy principles.

The pavilion aligns with the theme Come Build The Future, emphasizing Lovelace's pioneering use of punched cards to program the Analytical Engine in the 1840s. Emma Owens, director of culture at Woo Architects, states, "The pavilion's design celebrates Britain at a pivotal moment; our global reputation for innovation and creativity shines through."
Historical Context
In addition to honoring Lovelace, the design pays tribute to the 19th-century textile industries, featuring an undulating pattern reminiscent of woven fabric. The panels will be arranged in a way that reflects this historical significance, linking Manchester and Osaka during the Industrial Revolutions.
Construction Method
The pavilion will utilize modular components for easy disassembly, employing ES Global's Global Modular System for adaptability and reuse. This ensures the structure can be relocated post-expo.

Event Details
Expo 2025 will occur from April 13 to October 13, 2025, on Yumeshima Island in Osaka Bay, under the theme Designing Future Society for Our Lives. Other national pavilions include designs from Foster and Partners for Saudi Arabia and Trahan Architects for the USA.
Additionally, the UK Pavilion's mascot, named PIX, was revealed, constructed from red, blue, and white building blocks that can be reconfigured into various shapes.
