AIMASIA Residence: A31 and Tom Dixon Collaborate on New Project

Greek practice A31 Architecture and Tom Dixon‘s Design Research Studio have teamed up to create the AIMASIA Residence in Mykonos, Greece. Situated in the Elia region, this 850 sqm villa emerges gracefully from the sloping terrain, featuring an L-shaped volume that harmonizes with the natural hillside. An existing dry stone wall shapes the project’s design, supporting a three-layered structure that integrates green roofs and enhances the aesthetic appeal.

The villa is named after the ancient Greek word ‘αἱμασιά’, referring to stone fences used by farmers to create arable land. This design philosophy is deeply rooted in the landscape, with a 62-meter-long wall made of local Mykonian granite stone that follows the site’s contours. A31’s lead architect emphasizes the intention to integrate the villa into the environment, drawing from traditional techniques while using contemporary materials.

Local Geology Informs Tom Dixon’s Interior Design

The interior design, led by Tom Dixon and Helene Bangsbo, reflects Mykonos' unique geology. Local materials such as stone and aluminum are utilized throughout the villa. Dixon notes that the island's rocky terrain inspired many design elements, including integrated bathrooms and custom pieces like wall and floor lighting. The interiors are thematically divided, showcasing various materialities that echo the villa's natural context.

The villa includes a kitchen, dining room, living room, wine cellar, six bedrooms, and a detached suite, along with two private pools and a large infinity pool that offers breathtaking views of the Elia landscape. The use of cast in-situ exposed concrete ensures durability while allowing for a sculptural design that seamlessly blends with the surroundings.
