This retreat, recently completed, is part of a larger estate that includes a boathouse and a main house still under construction. El Aleph has been recognized for its serene yet powerful design, earning a nomination for the Wallpaper Design Awards 2025*.

Tour El Aleph: A Quiet, Yet Dramatic Canadian Guest House
Brian MacKay-Lyons, co-founder of the practice, has a long history with this plot, having attempted to build on it twice before. The current clients, hailing from New York, provided the perfect opportunity for a fresh start. The guest house is located on a sacred site for the Mi’kmaq People, set on an uplift ridge with breathtaking coastal views.
‘It’s a long journey from anywhere, it’s remote and dangerous, as well as spiritual, so it’s the perfect place to feel the solitude and be in tune with nature’
— Brian MacKay-Lyons
The main house, designed concurrently, features a drum shape centered around a square courtyard, inspired by Louis Khan’s Exeter Library. Positioned on granite bedrock, the guest house is elevated on stilts, giving a feeling of isolation and connection to nature.

The name El Aleph references Jorge Luis Borges’ work about a place where one can see everything in the universe. The design focuses on large openings that allow residents to immerse themselves in their environment, creating a panopticon effect of 360-degree views.

The architecture balances refined details with a rugged exterior, wrapped in a continuous leaded copper skin. MacKay-Lyons emphasizes the relationship between the building and the landscape, aiming for a design that feels timeless and connected to its surroundings.
Large unadorned spaces on the façades create moments of quiet, fostering a sense of peace amidst the wildness of the site. The architect highlights the importance of creating spaces that are silent but with more to say, reflecting on the noise of the world around us.

All of this architectural ingenuity and creativity has made El Aleph a noteworthy contender in the Wallpaper Design Awards 2025*, which will be celebrated online soon and featured in the February 2025 issue of Wallpaper*.
