A Creative Collaboration at Blunk Space
London-based designer Rio Kobayashi unveils a new series of furniture at Blunk Space, influenced by the midcentury artist Fritz Rauh. This exhibition reflects a powerful connection between historical artistry and contemporary design, showcasing pieces crafted from salvaged redwood during informal residencies at the Blunk House.
The Legacy of JB Blunk and Fritz Rauh
In the 1950s and 1960s, Marin County became a hub for artists like JB Blunk and Fritz Rauh, known for their unique artistic spirits. Blunk, celebrated for his organic sculptures, and Rauh, recognized for his vibrant paintings, shared a profound friendship that influenced their work and community.
A Modern Connection
Fast forward to today, Mariah Nielson, Blunk's daughter, discovered Kobayashi’s work and felt a nostalgic connection to Rauh's art. Kobayashi, a Japanese-Austrian designer, was recently named a future icon by Wallpaper*. His meticulous craftsmanship and vibrant colors evoke memories of Rauh's expressive paintings.
The Exhibition
Opening on 18 January, the exhibition will showcase Kobayashi's furniture alongside Rauh's historic paintings, inviting dialogue between past and present. The collection includes a table, bench, chair, and stools that reflect the natural forms and textures of the wood, merging modernist and traditional Japanese aesthetics.
This exhibition not only highlights the legacy of JB Blunk but also emphasizes the contemporary relevance of artistic conversations and friendships he nurtured. Rio Kobayashi + Fritz Rauh runs until 1 March 2025 at Blunk Space, dedicated to celebrating craft and composition.
