In an era defined by AI disruption and economic uncertainty, many professionals are contemplating drastic changesâwhether thatâs a career pivot or a geographical move. While these shifts can feel daunting, they often lead to unexpected opportunities. For Kent Wood, founder of Kwoo Studio, this transition has been transformative.
A Journey Across Continents
Kentâs path wasnât linear. Originally from the Caribbean, he studied kinesiology (the study of human movement) in Florida before living in Texas and returning to the Caribbean to run a wholesale distribution business for hotels and restaurants. However, the unsustainable hours, shrinking margins, and supply chain chaos made him question his long-term future in that industry.
When his partner was offered a role in the UK, Kent seized the opportunity to relocate to Manchester. This move coincided with a deeper personal reflection on what he truly wanted his life to look like outside of workâa sentiment shared by many Millennials and Gen Zers navigating rapid innovation and change.
The Full Circle Moment
Ironically, Kentâs background in kinesiology became the foundation for his new career in motion design. Having previously gained creative control over branding, logo design, and digital presence for his previous business, he naturally gravitated toward visual communication.
He now describes his niche as Motion Brand Designâa concept where modern brand identity extends beyond static guidelines into dynamic motion systems. "It's the future of branding," Kent explains. "Modern brand identity extends beyond static guidelines into motion identity systems."
Building Community Through Digital Presence
Since sharing his journey online, Kent has received an influx of messages from others undergoing similar transitions. He emphasizes the importance of authenticity and visibility in todayâs market:
- Digital Business Card: Kent views social media not just as a portfolio, but as a vital networking tool. "It's essentially free to post... so we should take full advantage."
- Networking Power: Sharing his story helped him secure meetings with studios and connect with local creatives in Northern England. "People feel like they already know you, which makes meeting other freelancers and building your network so much easier."
- Community Support: He credits the welcoming nature of the Northern creative community and events like The Northern Design Festival for making his transition smoother.
Kentâs advice for those considering a pivot is clear: put yourself out there strategically. Align your content with your brand values, and don't underestimate the power of showing up consistently online.
