Summary:

  • Rectangular bathroom sinks are criticized for being impractical and hard to clean, with corners that collect grime.

  • Closets in bathrooms are hated for causing inconvenience, like waiting for someone to finish using the toilet.

  • Monochrome white and gray interiors are seen as boring and prison-like, with calls for more color and pattern.

  • Open-wall showers are questioned for practicality, as they can wet the floor outside the shower area.

  • Huge kitchens are deemed wasteful, taking up space with unnecessary cabinets that often go unused.

  • Modern farmhouse style is accused of ruining historic homes by adding cheap, trendy elements.

  • Open shelving is disliked for looking messy and collecting dust, with wood cabinets preferred for warmth.

  • 'Boneless' sofa couches are frustrating for replacing traditional pull-out sofa beds with bulky designs.

  • Black tiling in bathrooms shows every hair and always appears dirty, making maintenance a hassle.

  • Open concept layouts are losing favor for being impractical and limiting wall space for art.

Gen Z is speaking out against popular modern home design trends that they find impractical and unappealing. Here are the 13 trends they despise, with reasons why.

1. Rectangular Bathroom Sinks

"Rectangular sinks in the bathroom. They are as bad as pedestal sinks. I want space to put my stuff down. My makeup, curling iron, hairbrush, whatever. These rectangular sinks are everywhere right now. They are just a trend — they go out of style."

"And then, what's gonna happen to all these people with rectangular sinks? They're all going to want to replace them. And who benefits from it?" — chillhedgehog384

"Square or rectangular sinks. They are much harder to keep clean with all the corners." — Anonymous

2. Closets in the Bathroom

"I HATE closets in the bathroom. You have to wait for someone to finish pooping before you can go in and grab a shirt." — Anonymous, Texas

3. Monochrome White and Gray Interiors

"I despise the white/light gray monochrome look — and boring minimalist furniture that’s all the same color. My brother is a realtor and advises to avoid that look at all costs. Bring back colors and paneling and patterned upholstery." — jcs3d

"Sad beige/grey everything. It makes houses look like prisons and feels like the design equivalent of watching TV static." — Anonymous

4. Open-Wall Showers

"I don't get open-wall showers. Doesn't the floor outside the shower get all wet?!" — deadpancupcake92

5. Pure White Lighting

"Pure white lighting. No explanation needed." — Anonymous

6. Huge Kitchens

"I hate huge kitchens. They take up space that could be used for something else. Not to mention that you won't need all 28 cabinets and drawers. You're not a five-star restaurant, so you really only need about half of that. The rest is usually piled with trash. They are mostly white because it's too expensive to repaint. It just looks like bare unused space." — Anonymous

7. Modern Farmhouse Style

"Those darn modern farmhouses! House flippers will take a historically accurate Victorian farmhouse, and add in exposed beams, reclaimed wood, and vinyl flooring until it looks like an Ikea showroom." — Anonymous, 25

8. Open Shelving

"I dislike open shelving as it looks messy and gets dusty. Wood cabinets are better for storage and feel warmer." — Anonymous

9. 'Boneless' Sofa Couches

"Those big 'boneless' sofa couches. You cannot find a regular pull-out sofa bed anymore! There are all these random giant cushion couches if you want a sleeper sofa. Why can't I just buy a run-of-the-mill couch with a mattress that pulls out???" — Anonymous, Pennsylvania

10. Black Tiling in Bathrooms

"Black tiling on the bathroom floor or shower. It always looks dirty, and you see every hair." — Anonymous, 21, Canada

11. Focal Points in Every Room

"Focal points. Not every room needs a feature guests should stare at." — Anonymous, 29, Michigan

12. Open Concept Layouts

"Open concept. People are realizing how impractical it is and are also wanting to hang art on some walls again!" — Anonymous

13. Modern Chandeliers

"'Modern' chandeliers are just a mistake. It’s a total disgrace to chandeliers and any kind of classical lighting." — Anonymous
