From Dark and Insular to Luminous and Refined
In the heart of Madrid's Justicia neighborhood—arguably the city center—architect Ángela Bermúdez undertook a remarkable transformation of a 646-square-foot apartment that had been stuck in the 1980s. The space was formerly dark and insular, but through strategic design interventions, it has been reimagined as a luminous, refined interior with quietly Parisian notes.
Maximizing Space and Light
Though small, the apartment now feels spacious thanks to several key design choices:
- Crown moldings on the ceiling and walls
- Enormous side mirrors that reflect light and create depth
- Abundant natural light that floods the living room, dining room, and kitchen
These elements work together to maximize the perceived spaciousness of the compact floor plan.
The Transformation Process
Architect Bermúdez helped the owners as they were looking for a property to purchase, and once they found this apartment, she implemented a thoughtful renovation strategy. The project involved breaking down walls to open up the space and installing crown moldings to add architectural interest and elegance.

Design Philosophy
The renovation demonstrates how strategic design choices can completely transform a space without expanding its footprint. By focusing on light optimization, spatial perception, and architectural detailing, Bermúdez created a home that feels both elegant and functional.
The result is a testament to how thoughtful renovation can restore a property to its former glory while adapting it to contemporary living standards.
