How Interactive Furniture Shapes Human Behavior and Space Exploration

‘Fill the Gap, Trace the Path, Hang the Loop’ by Inkyoung Lee
What role does furniture play in a space? Inkyoung Lee’s project ‘Fill the Gap, Trace the Path, Hang the Loop’ explores this question through interactive designs that prompt immediate engagement. Everyday objects shape our actions instinctively, providing clues through their form, materials, and familiar contexts. This accumulated experience guides our interaction with new objects, which in turn, shapes our actions.

Furniture Redefines Space Through Exploration and Engagement
In ‘Fill the Gap’, door catches are strategically placed on acrylic boxes. While they resemble shelves, their fronts are blocked, urging users to explore the open gaps. The transparent acrylic reveals the door catches inside, sparking curiosity. As objects are inserted, their interaction naturally demonstrates the door catch’s purpose, creating a floating effect and offering a new perception of space without a floor.
‘Trace the Path’ features four pipes with movable handles. Users observe the layout, recognize the handle's vertical movement, and fit it into grooves, encouraging experimentation and creative use. ‘Hang the Loop’ consists of rows of hooks with movable steel beads, prompting users to engage and explore various arrangements.
Designer Inkyoung Lee illustrates how furniture can subtly guide human behavior, inviting exploration and challenging conventional notions of spatial use.
