Inside Gloria Steinem's Timeless Manhattan Brownstone: A Feminist Haven Reimagined

A Personal Touch in Design

Gloria Steinem, the legendary feminist icon, reflects on her life in her Manhattan brownstone, a space filled with memories and personal touches. With the help of designer Jane Hallworth, Steinem aims to maintain the home's character while updating its functionality.

The Design Journey

Hallworth's approach was hands-on; she was initially hesitant to alter the space, feeling its character was almost sacred. However, she quickly realized that infrastructure updates were necessary. Her primary focus was on the bathrooms and the ground-floor kitchen. Key updates included:

• Custom cabinetry painted in a rich aubergine hue.
• Calacatta Viola marble countertops surrounding a farmhouse sink.
• A new Fisher & Paykel range for modern cooking needs.

In the master bath, peacock blue Clé tiles add a vibrant touch, while floral curtains create a cozy bathing nook. The walls throughout the space are adorned with images that reflect Steinem's life and values, showcasing her commitment to the feminist cause.

A Punk Rock Bedroom

Steinem's bedroom is a testament to her personal style, featuring:

• Bookcases filled with her favorite reads.
• Ralph Lauren bayadere-striped fabric on the walls.
• Her signature aviator glasses on the bedside table.

Hallworth admitted she left the bedroom untouched, calling it “so punk rock.”

A Space for Connection

Steinem envisions her home as a gathering place for women to discuss important issues and find refuge. Currently, she is working on a new book, filled with insights and stories that reflect her lifelong commitment to equality and human rights.

Steinem's optimism remains unwavering, as she believes that what we expect can influence reality. Surrounded by young women who share her passion, she continues to inspire and engage.

Upcoming Events

In the coming days, Steinem will host a political fundraising dinner with her friend, photographer Annie Leibovitz. Notably, the caterer they selected is led by a female CEO, reinforcing Steinem's commitment to empowering women in all aspects of life.
