Inside the $1.2 Million Compound Built by Three Friends for Communal Living in Their Golden Years
Three Friends Create a Communal Sanctuary
In a heartwarming story of friendship and resilience, three Texas women—Christina Guerra, Michelle Douthitt, and Muriel Lanford—have built a $1.2 million compound designed for communal living as they age. After losing their husbands, they decided to sell their homes and invest in a shared future, creating a safe and nurturing environment for themselves near San Antonio.
A Unique Vision for Aging Together
The trio likens their bond to the iconic Golden Girls, sharing meals, splitting bills, and most importantly, caring for one another. They purchased five acres of land for $175,000 and enlisted the help of Ziga Architecture Studio to design their dream home, which they named Tierra de Dios (Land of God).
The compound features a 2,378-square-foot main house with private wings for each sister and a separate 1,902-square-foot guest house for Lanford. The thoughtful design allows them to maintain their independence while fostering a sense of community.
Focus on Safety and Accessibility
The women prioritized safety and accessibility in their home design, ensuring minimal steps and wheelchair access throughout. Each living space is equipped with grab bars and shower benches, making it easier for them to age in place comfortably.
Shared Responsibilities and Roles
Each woman has a unique role within the compound: Lanford manages finances and maintenance, Douthitt is the resident gardener, and Guerra is the designated bargain hunter. They split the compound's utility bills, keeping costs low and encouraging teamwork.
A Designated Wildlife Habitat
The compound is not only a home but also a designated butterfly sanctuary and wildlife habitat. The women have created a nurturing environment for local wildlife, complete with bird feeders and water sources.
Building Community and Connection
Living together has allowed the women to forge a deeper connection. They enjoy shared activities, from cooking and movie nights to gardening, which has helped them navigate the challenges of aging and isolation.
By creating a supportive communal living environment, these three women have turned a challenging life transition into an inspiring story of friendship, resilience, and shared purpose.
