Dezeen has revealed the Bentley Lighthouse Award shortlist for this year's prestigious Dezeen Awards, spotlighting six groundbreaking individuals whose work is driving positive change in design and sustainability.

What is the Bentley Lighthouse Award?

The Bentley Lighthouse Award honors those making a significant impact on social and environmental sustainability, inclusivity, and community empowerment. This year's shortlist includes innovators like Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto of EcoLogicStudio, and Jo Barnard of Morrama.

Groundbreaking Projects from the Shortlist

These designers are behind remarkable initiatives such as:

  • An algae-powered air purifier that also produces material for furniture and accessories
  • Regenerative architectural surfaces used in a cave-like store with ceiling oculi
  • An AI-tailored pill subscription service for menopause treatment
  • Strategic plans for sustainable peat meadows in the Netherlands

Dezeen Awards 2025, in partnership with Bentley, has announced all shortlisted projects across architecture, interiors, design, and sustainability categories. The complete Designers of the Year shortlist is available on the Dezeen Awards website.

"The Bentley Lighthouse Award continues to celebrate those redefining what it means to create positive change," said Ben Saltmer, Dezeen Awards judge and head of lifestyle design at Bentley. "This year's shortlist shines a light on forward-thinking individuals and ideas that challenge convention and inspire a more responsible and imaginative future."

Meet the Shortlisted Designers

Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto - EcoLogicStudio

Pasquero and Poletto co-founded EcoLogicStudio, specializing in biodesign and urban ecology. Their practice develops nature-based technologies addressing pollution, energy use, and climate resilience in cities.

Recent projects include a new hybrid studio and design lab in Turin, Italy, conceived as "an experiment in living in the fourth industrial revolution," integrating experimental biodesign into daily life.

Henriëtte Waal - Veenweide Atelier

Dutch designer Henriëtte Waal leads Veenweide Atelier, a long-term research project exploring sustainable futures for the peat meadows of Friesland, Netherlands. She collaborates with scientists, farmers, and designers to restore the region's ecosystem.

Waal also co-founded Atelier Luma, a biodesign laboratory in Arles, France, known for projects like Le Magasin Électrique, showcasing a "bioregional approach" to design.

Jessie French - Other Matter

Melbourne-based designer Jessie French founded Other Matter, a research and design studio exploring alternatives to petrochemical plastics. Her work focuses on algae-derived polymers as biodegradable, non-toxic replacements for fossil-based plastics.

Recent projects include Aesop's first store in Hainan Island, China, and installations at Melbourne Design Week.

Nichole Rouillac - Level Design SF

San Francisco-based designer Nichole Rouillac founded Level, a women-led industrial design studio. She champions inclusivity and balance in industrial design, creating functional products that enhance wellbeing.

Recent projects include the Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (LIFU) device OpenWater for disease treatment and the Dandi IVF Care Kit to improve fertility care experiences.
