Renowned Design Firm HKS Awarded Design of New Domed Stadium

When Lance Evans and HKS first learned they were awarded the opportunity to design a new domed stadium for the Browns, Managing and Principal Partners Dee and Jimmy Haslam gifted Evans a retro Cleveland Browns jacket, which he wears proudly. This jacket has become a conversation starter among Browns fans across the country, symbolizing his connection to the team.

As the Venues Design Director and lead architect for the new Huntington Bank Field, Evans emphasizes the significant responsibility of creating a home for the team and its passionate fan base. "It's a home for the team, for the fan base. I think our number one mission here is to design an invention for the Browns," Evans stated. The Haslams aim to build something unprecedented, focusing on the future of both the Browns and the city of Cleveland.

Evans highlights the importance of understanding Cleveland's history and culture in the design process. The collaborative dialogue with the Haslams has led to a design that respects the past while looking forward to the future, resulting in an iconic stadium that fans will instantly recognize.

With 20 years of experience in architecture, including roles in the design of notable venues like U.S. Bank Stadium and SoFi Stadium, Evans and his team have evolved their approach to creating spaces that enhance the fan experience. Listening to the desires of ownership, the team, and the fan base is crucial in shaping the new venue.

In October 2024, the Haslams announced plans for an enclosed stadium in Brook Park, with updated renderings showcasing the ambitious design and surrounding entertainment district. Evans emphasizes that the new stadium will be unlike any other, with a focus on local elements that reflect Cleveland’s identity.

A standout feature is the Dawg Pound, designed as a vertical wall of fans to amplify the energy during games. The seating bowl will be the lowest in the NFL, allowing fans to be closer to the action, creating an electrifying atmosphere.

Due to height restrictions near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the stadium will be partially embedded in the ground, leading to the innovative Grand Concourse that redefines fan interaction with upscale food and beverage options.

One of Evans' favorite features is a cantilevered bridge offering panoramic views and a unique perspective of the stadium. The roof design draws inspiration from Cleveland’s iconic atriums, promising a natural light-filled environment that enhances the game-day experience.

Evans also highlights the integration of multimedia experiences, including large video boards that keep fans connected to the action, regardless of where they are in the stadium.

This stadium is not just for Browns games; it is designed to host various events, with a flexible capacity ranging from 6,000 to 70,000. Evans envisions this venue as a super theater, aiming for a lasting legacy that will resonate for generations.

"We're not trying to replicate anything with this stadium. This is truly one of its kind for a city, and we believe that it's going to be such an amazing experience on opening day," Evans concluded.
