Nnedy Obiwuru, once a sports marketing professional, recalls how business trips to boutique hotels were a highlight of her career. Now, living in a two-bedroom apartment in Austin, she decided to recreate that luxurious hotel experience in her own home.

Reimagining the Space

Nnedy's transformation journey began in 2023 when she started sharing her progress on TikTok and Instagram, quickly attracting a dedicated following. Despite living in a rental, she embraced bold changes such as installing ornamental wall panels and crafting custom furniture. Nnedy emphasizes that her goal is to create a space that reflects her true self, stating, "I’m going to make it as big and as grand as I can."

Designing with Inspiration

For her home bar, Nnedy drew inspiration from Shrek, creating a unique theme that resonates with her childhood experiences. She named the bar The Last Layer, a nod to the character's famous line about layers. The space features a foldable bar, red velvet banquette seating, and a moody ambiance, reminiscent of a modern speakeasy.

Budgeting and Aesthetic Choices

Nnedy admits her budget is often flexible, stating, "The budget is always zero, honestly. There’s no budget." She aims to keep costs low by thrifting and creatively reusing items. Her aesthetic leans vintage and traditional, influenced by her immigrant background.

Multifunctional Design

The guest room is multifunctional, serving as an office, dining space, and guest room. Nnedy cleverly designed it to swap furniture easily, turning the bar area into a bed for overnight guests.

The Final Touches

As she continues to refine her space, Nnedy plans to add more art and lighting to the bar, creating a cozy atmosphere for entertaining. Her approach to design is intentional, ensuring that each element is thoughtfully chosen.
