A Forgotten Gem Reimagined
In the heart of Baton Rouge's Garden District, a 1927 estate with a crumbling carriage house caught the eye of architect Hance Day Hughes and his partner, Jason Broha. Despite its disrepair, the duo saw beyond the peeling paint and mismatched shutters to the potential beneath. Their vision led to the transformation of this forgotten outbuilding into a polished, functional apartment.
Clever Design Meets Historic Charm
The design firm Tiek Byday took on the challenge, turning the 450-square-foot space into a home that blends clever storage solutions with custom details. The project wasn't just about aesthetics; it was about preserving history while making the space livable for modern needs. The carriage house, originally built for Standard Oil president Alfred S. John, now serves as a testament to thoughtful design and renovation.
Overcoming Challenges
The journey wasn't without its hurdles. The main house and carriage house had lost their luster over the years, requiring significant work to restore their former glory. However, Hughes and Broha's dedication to the project paid off, resulting in a space that honors its historic roots while offering contemporary comforts.
