Transforming a '90s Home: Discover How a Designer Revamped This Kirkland Gem

A Home Stuck in the Past
This four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom home in Kirkland, Washington, had a great layout but was in dire need of a design refresh. Designer Jessica Nelson was brought in to modernize the space that felt stuck in the â90s.
âWe did minimal layout revisions for this project because the flow of the home was actually great,â Jessica says.
Outdated Finishes
Jessica noted that while the home had a beautiful structure, the finishes and fixtures were outdated. The kitchen was notably dark, and one bathroom was missing a tub, a significant issue for the client who enjoys baths. Additionally, the primary bathroom had a leaky steam shower that needed urgent attention.
A chaise lounge was added to the sunroom to create the perfect reading spot.
Personal Touches
The client wanted the home to reflect her family's personality. Jessica mentioned, âThe main struggle was that this home didnât feel like them.â To address this, they incorporated softer colors, patterns, and textures throughout the home, drawing inspiration from French kitchens and natural stone.
Cabinets and appliances were updated in the kitchen.
Renovation Phases
The renovation took place in two phases. The first phase focused on the kitchen, powder room, and primary bathroom. The kitchen received a complete overhaul with new cabinets and appliances.
The powder room now has plenty of personality.
The powder room was transformed with eye-catching wallpaper, an antique-looking rug, and brass fixtures.
The leaky steam shower was removed in the primary bathroom.
Addressing Leaks
In the primary bathroom, Jessica and her team performed a full gut renovation due to significant rot caused by the leaky steam shower. They installed new tiles, fixtures, and finishes to create a fresh, modern space.
Guest and Craft Rooms
The second phase included renovations to the guest bathrooms, a craft room, and the laundry room. The craft room was transformed from an upstairs laundry room into a functional workspace with smart storage solutions.
The craft room features smart storage.
A Functional Laundry Room
The laundry room also underwent a redesign to enhance its functionality, ensuring it met the family's needs.
The charming exterior.
This was Jessica's third project with these clients, which facilitated a smoother renovation process. âThey are so happyâthey feel like their home is welcoming and comfortable and now reflects them!â
