Summary:

  • Deep retrofit transforms a historic butcher shop into a modern family retreat.

  • Focused on maximizing views while respecting local architecture.

  • Incorporated energy-efficient technologies such as air-source heat pumps.

  • Designed to accommodate large gatherings with flexible spaces.

  • Collaboration with various specialists ensured a cohesive design approach.

Project Overview

This deep retrofit of a house located on the North Norfolk coast reimagines a building that was once the village butcher's shop. The design, led by A + S, aimed to modernize a historic structure while preserving its local significance and enhancing its connection to the stunning landscape.

Design Goals

Upon initial inspection, the architects recognized the house's potential, particularly its unique views of the marshy landscape. The reconfiguration aimed to create a versatile space suitable for large family gatherings, incorporating a dormitory for children and a more open circulation route that aligns with the best views towards the coast.

Modernization Details

The project involved a comprehensive internal renovation, where nearly everything except the building's shell was redesigned. This included:

  • Air-source heat pumps for energy efficiency
  • Extensive internal insulation to enhance comfort
  • A design that respects the local architectural context

Visual Connection to Nature

One of the primary objectives was to maximize views while maintaining a respectful approach that does not overshadow nearby properties. The architects aimed for a subtle exterior that seamlessly blends with its surroundings, while inside, the design offers a mix of minimalist aesthetics and opportunities for expressive design in spaces like the bathrooms.

Collaborative Efforts

The design process spanned three years, involving close collaboration with various specialists, including electrical, plumbing, and carpentry experts. Each room was designed individually, with detailed attention given to finishes such as lighting and materials.

Overall Impact

The outcome is a serene and inviting space that highlights the connection between the house and its natural environment. The design honors the building's history while providing a modern, functional home for its inhabitants.
