Rethinking Cincinnati's Abandoned Subway Tunnels

In October, city officials posed a crucial question: What can we do with the abandoned subway tunnels? This initiated a Request for Information to gather insights from businesses capable of enhancing this underutilized space. The city received 18 varied proposals, ranging from ideas by local residents to comprehensive plans from design and architecture firms.

The submissions presented innovative concepts, including:

  • Bathhouse designs reminiscent of ancient Roman baths.
  • Underground arts experiences and cultural hubs.
  • Proposals to restore the canal within the city.

Mark Jeffreys, a Cincinnati council member, noted, "You cast the net wide, you get creative ideas ... some of them are way out there and may not be feasible, but that pushes the thinking."

Key Proposals

The Rhineline

Yard & Co. proposed a "sprawling tapestry of interconnected experiences" that would create pedestrian and bike paths linking art installations, historical exhibits, and business spaces, including retail and tech startups. The design aims to break the tunnels into distinct areas, each offering unique experiences, such as a sunken forest or a dynamic performance space.

Cincinnati Arts Underground

A collaboration involving the University of Cincinnati and several local arts organizations envisioned a vibrant arts district featuring live performances, light and sound installations, and a street art gallery. This proposal aims to transform the tunnels into a hub for creativity and community engagement.
