Transforming Tradition: A Bold Update of a Pasadena Craftsman Home by Jamie Haller

A Craftsman Whisperer
Interior designer Jamie Haller has gained a reputation as a Craftsman whisperer, specializing in the delicate art of renovating historic homes while preserving their original charm. Gaby and Helena Tseregounis sought her expertise for their 1913 Craftsman in Pasadena, wanting to maintain the home's history while giving it a modern refresh.
Preserving Original Details
Haller meticulously retained elements like dark wood moldings, pocket doors, and three-over-one windows, while infusing the space with bold yet traditional patterns, vintage furniture, and contemporary lighting. "We were looking at it through the lens of what makes sense for the age of the home and seems classic, but also feels fresh and relevant,” she explains.
Thoughtful Design Choices
In the entryway, Haller created drama with moody botanical wallpaper that echoes the living room’s color scheme. The espresso-toned trim and original sage tile fireplace provide a striking contrast against Linen White paint by Benjamin Moore. Vintage pieces, like the Belmont Sofa from Lulu and Georgia, complement the leafy Hepburn Pillows from Pierce & Ward, adding layers of texture and color.
The Heart of the Home: Kitchen and Dining
The kitchen, a cozy space created by combining two smaller rooms, features walnut Shaker cupboards and soapstone countertops. Haller aimed for a serene aesthetic, allowing the cabinetry to shine. The adjoining dining room, swathed in Calke Green paint by Farrow & Ball, showcases a leaded glass built-in buffet, paired with bamboo chairs and a Chinoiserie-style dresser, creating a harmonious connection with the home's overall design.
Flow and Functionality
Haller designed the home to flow cohesively, with sight lines connecting the kitchen, dining, and living areas. The TV room, featuring a Jacquard block print couch, is enhanced by a brass dome pendant, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Personal Touches
Haller also added a whimsical touch to the children’s playroom with French fable-inspired toile wallpaper, and the primary bathroom boasts luxurious finishes, including a freestanding tub and antique-style vanity.
Celebrating the Past
Haller’s thoughtful renovations respect the home’s history while incorporating modern comforts. “There are little fun design surprises throughout the house,” Tseregounis notes, highlighting the preserved traditional push-button light switches as a nod to the home's past.
