Transforming Tradition: Studio Becker Xu's Innovative Dogtrot House in North Carolina

Studio Becker Xu's Dogtrot House

Chicago-based Studio Becker Xu has reimagined the traditional dogtrot house, creating a stunning residence in North Carolina. This unique design features a series of pavilion-like blocks capped with a pine gable, emphasizing seamless indoor-outdoor living.

The 3200-square foot home is situated on a 10-acre wooded site in Hillsborough, overlooking a serene pond. The design pays homage to the classic southern dogtrot style, traditionally consisting of two enclosed living areas connected by a breezeway.

A Modern Take on Southern Living

Completed in 2023, the Dogtrot House features a central corridor that serves as the heart of the home, boasting a 20-foot cathedral ceiling and sliding glazed walls that open to a long covered porch. The gabled ends create shaded porches, enhancing the connection with nature.

The exterior showcases a mix of board-formed concrete, polished masonry, and light-toned fiber cement panels, all arranged in striking geometric blocks. A dark standing-seam metal roof adds a modern touch, while thin red columns inject vibrant pops of color.

Functional and Fluid Spaces

Inside, the house is divided into four distinct pavilions, each serving a unique function and offering views in multiple directions. The dining room, featuring a reclaimed red oak table, is designed with a circular window that breaks the orthogonal design, enhancing the aesthetic appeal.

The floating staircase leads to a loft, providing access to additional living space while maintaining an open and airy feel throughout the home. Each pavilion frames a different perspective of the surrounding landscape, creating a dynamic experience for residents.

Architectural Innovation

Co-founder Sharon Xu describes the home as a fluid experience, where architectural elements blend seamlessly with the natural environment. The curved concrete arcs and red columns serve as a flexible framework for various activities, from family gatherings to children's play areas.

This innovative approach to the dogtrot house not only honors tradition but also adapts it for modern living, making it a remarkable addition to contemporary architecture in North Carolina.
