Transforming Tradition: The Stunning Modern Makeover of Lamat House by Objekt Architecten

Belgian studio Objekt Architecten has revitalized the Lamat House in rural Wichelen, introducing a contemporary interior of exposed concrete and red steelwork while maintaining its traditional red-brick exterior.

Opening Up to Nature

After moisture damage obscured the house's distinctive stepped gable ends, the architects focused on enhancing views of the surrounding countryside. A series of contemporary elements, including a double-height window and a mezzanine, successfully restored the home’s traditional character, eliminating the previous dark and cramped atmosphere.

Architect Steven de Bolle emphasized that the original layout hindered the inhabitants from enjoying the views, stating, "Our concept revolves around this view, within the existing boundaries of the house and the limits of the available budget."

Interior Innovations

The most radical changes occurred inside, where a double-height living area was created by removing the existing ceiling, leading to a spacious dining area and a kitchen adorned with blue tiles. The areas are separated by a large tropical planter, clad in pale blue tiles, creating a unique visual distinction.

Red steel columns support a new mezzanine lounge that overlooks the living area and garden, while the original wooden roof structure has been reinforced with matching steel supports. This blend of materials not only marks the separation of functions but also adds a striking design element throughout the home.

A Functional yet Surprising Design

Bolle noted, "The materials were chosen based on colour, practicality, quality, and budget. The goal was to create a surprising interior, without compromising on usability."

While the front of the home remains more compartmentalized, housing the bedroom, bathroom, and study, the overall transformation showcases how modern design can harmoniously blend with traditional architecture.
