Backend Developer

Compensation Note: As an early-stage startup, compensation will be deferred until the completion of the initial 6-month contract, with payment terms to be finalized upon contract expiration. Equity or performance-based incentives may be offered as part of the compensation package, subject to agreement.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Backend Developer to design, develop, and maintain the server-side infrastructure of our global auction platform. You will play a critical role in building scalable APIs, ensuring real-time performance for live auctions, and integrating with databases and third-party services. Working closely with our frontend team, data analyst, and UI/UX designer, you will help deliver a secure, reliable, and high-performance platform that supports a global user base.

Key Responsibilities

• API Development: Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and GraphQL endpoints using Node.js to support frontend functionalities, including user authentication, bidding, and product management.
• Real-Time Systems: Implement and optimize real-time features for live auctions using Socket.io to ensure low-latency bid updates and notifications.
• Database Management: Design and manage PostgreSQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, and ensuring data integrity for high-transaction environments.
• Scalability & Performance: Architect scalable backend systems on AWS (e.g., EC2, Lambda, RDS) to handle high traffic and ensure uptime during peak auction periods.
• Security: Implement robust security measures, including data encryption, secure API authentication (e.g., JWT, OAuth), and protection against common vulnerabilities (e.g., SQL injection, XSS).
• Integration: Integrate third-party services such as payment gateways (e.g., Stripe, PayPal), shipping APIs, and analytics tools to enhance platform functionality.
• Collaboration: Work closely with frontend developers (React), UI/UX designers, and data analysts to ensure seamless integration and a cohesive user experience.
• Code Quality: Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code, adhering to best practices and conducting thorough testing (unit, integration, and end-to-end).
• DevOps: Collaborate on CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), and deployment processes to streamline development and ensure reliable releases.
• Troubleshooting: Monitor, debug, and resolve production issues, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance.

Required Qualifications

• Experience: 3+ years of professional experience in backend development, with a proven track record of building scalable web applications.
• Technical Skills:
• Proficiency in Node.js and frameworks like Express.js for building APIs.
• Strong experience with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases, including schema design and query optimization.
• Familiarity with Socket.io or real-time communication protocols for live features.
• Experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda) or similar cloud platforms.
• Knowledge of RESTful API design, GraphQL, and microservices architecture.
• Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Security Knowledge: Understanding of secure coding practices, authentication mechanisms (JWT, OAuth), and data encryption standards.
• Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues and optimize system performance.
• Collaboration: Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented mindset, with experience working in cross-functional teams.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building e-commerce or auction platforms with real-time bidding features.
• Familiarity with React or frontend technologies to facilitate collaboration with the frontend team.
• Knowledge of containerization (Docker) and orchestration tools (Kubernetes).
• Experience with payment gateway integrations (e.g., Stripe, PayPal).
• Understanding of scalability challenges in high-transaction environments.
• Contributions to open-source projects or a strong portfolio showcasing backend work.
