Job Description: Senior Packaging Designer (BigMouth Brand)
Role + Responsibility
Location: Remote
Type: Full-time
Reports to: CGO
Mission
To own and drive the full lifecycle of BigMouth brand packaging—from creative concept through production delivery. You’ll ensure packaging is not only fun and on-brand, but also accurate, on time, and ready for retail.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
End-to-End Execution
- Run packaging projects from brief → concept → mechanicals → proofing → final handoff.
- Maintain schedules, version control, and routing guides; deliverables land complete and on time.
- Proactively flag risks (cost, feasibility, timing) and drive resolution across Brand, Product, and vendors.
- Own the end-to-end packaging lifecycle—from brief intake and concept ideation to proofing and final handoff—while collaborating closely with cross-functional departments (Brand, Product, Sales, Retail, and Licensors) to align on goals, incorporate diverse inputs, and resolve interdepartmental dependencies.
- Facilitate regular cross-functional check-ins (e.g., weekly syncs or milestone reviews) to ensure seamless execution, track progress, and mitigate risks across departments, achieving 100% on-time project delivery.
Design & Mechanicals
- Turn moodboards, copy tone, and story themes into clear, shelf-ready layouts.
- Create detailed mechanicals, ensuring artwork adheres to industry standards and regulations.
- Build accurate dielines and production specs (dimensions, materials, finishes, barcodes, warnings, legal).
- Balance BigMouth flair with legibility, hierarchy, compliance, and manufacturability.
- Maintain rigorous compliance with all packaging regulations (e.g., FDA labeling, CPSC safety standards, international trade requirements) by conducting self-audits on every project deliverable and collaborating with Legal/Compliance teams for validation, ensuring zero non-compliance incidents.
- Stay abreast of evolving compliance standards through continuous learning and cross-functional knowledge-sharing sessions, documenting updates in a shared repository for team reference.
Image & Asset Production
- Edit, retouch, and prepare images for packaging, including masking, background removal, compositing, cleanup, cloning, cropping, and quality control.
- Follow brand guidelines and apply consistent retouching direction across all imagery used.
- Color correct and ensure consistency across image sets on packaging.
- Produce high-quality 2D renderings/mockups to visualize packages, PDQs, and shippers for internal reviews and retailer decks.
Production & Vendor Collaboration
- Prepare supplier-ready files; validate color profiles, overprints, traps, bleeds, and print tolerances.
- Partner with printers on proofs and approve against standards and color targets.
- Write clear, actionable notes for offshore partners to ensure seamless handoffs and revisions.
Ways of Working
- Apply problem-solving and critical thinking skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Synthesize feedback from Brand, Product, Licensors, and Retail to make smart, production-savvy decisions.
- Protect creative intent while meeting feasibility, cost, and timeline constraints.
- Foster strong cross-functional collaboration by building relationships with departments such as Brand (for creative alignment), Product (for feasibility checks), Sales/Retail (for market insights), and Licensors (for approval compliance), ensuring all packaging outputs support broader business objectives.
- Proactively manage stakeholder expectations through clear communication channels (e.g., shared tools like Slack or Asana), document decisions, and resolve conflicts to maintain project momentum and accountability.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of packaging design experience with a proven track record in retail-focused brands.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
- Advanced skills in visual design, illustration, print and layout standards, color theory, and typography.
- Highly detail-oriented with strong design and image retouching skills.
- Proven expertise in creating high-quality 2D renderings and photorealistic mockups.
- Strong retouching skills with experience in product and lifestyle photography.
- Advanced packaging production knowledge: dielines, file organization, prepress, color management.
- Familiarity with retailer routing guides, licensor requirements, barcodes, warnings, and regulatory marks.
Bonus
- Experience leveraging AI tools (e.g., Midjourney, DALL·E, or similar) for creative ideation, mockup generation, or workflow automation, with a focus on enhancing productivity without compromising brand standards.
- Experience with large-format displays/merchandising, corrugate, and specialty finishes.
- Comfort collaborating in shared file environments (e.g., Figma/SharePoint/Drive).
Who You Are
You’re a creative problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes pride in delivering pixel-perfect packaging that delights customers and meets retail demands.
