About the role

Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Remote – United States (occasional travel required)

Want to apply your mechanical design expertise to hardware that will operate in space?

We're partnering with an ambitious, fast-growing space technology company seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to develop complex mechanical systems and precision mechanisms for next-generation satellite applications.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of mechanical designs, solving challenging technical problems, and seeing their work progress from initial concept through manufacturing, integration, and testing.

You don't necessarily need previous space industry experience. We're interested in engineers with strong mechanical design backgrounds, particularly those experienced in precision mechanisms, moving assemblies, electromechanical systems, or complex hardware development.

The Opportunity

  • Design and develop mechanical assemblies, mechanisms, and precision-engineered hardware.
  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Perform design calculations, engineering trade studies, and mechanical analysis.
  • Optimize mechanical systems for performance, reliability, manufacturability, and assembly.
  • Work with external suppliers to support component development, manufacturing, and delivery.
  • Collaborate with electrical, systems, and integration teams to develop mechanical interfaces.
  • Support hardware integration, functional testing, and environmental qualification.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and implement design improvements.
  • Contribute to engineering design reviews and technical decision-making.

What We're Looking For

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • 3+ years of hands-on mechanical design experience.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills using SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or similar software.
  • Experience designing mechanical assemblies, precision components, or moving mechanisms.
  • Understanding of mechanical tolerancing, materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture.
  • Familiarity with FEA, mechanical analysis, or engineering calculations.
  • Experience taking designs beyond CAD into manufacturing, assembly, or testing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple technical priorities.

Additional experience that would be beneficial:

  • Mechanisms involving actuators, hinges, linkages, gears, bearings, or deployment systems.
  • Electromechanical assemblies and multidisciplinary hardware.
  • Aerospace, robotics, automotive, defense, or other precision engineering sectors.
  • Supplier engagement, design reviews, and hardware qualification.
  • PLM/PDM systems and engineering configuration control.

Previous aerospace experience is advantageous but not essential.

What's in It for You?

  • Remote working across the United States, with occasional travel for engineering collaboration and hardware activities.
  • Apply your mechanical design experience to advanced satellite technology.
  • Work on challenging precision mechanisms and complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Own designs throughout the engineering lifecycle, rather than focusing solely on CAD modelling.
  • Join a fast-moving engineering organization where your technical contributions directly influence hardware development.
  • Build valuable experience in the rapidly growing commercial space industry.

If you're a mechanical design engineer who enjoys developing complex hardware and wants to contribute to real spacecraft missions, we'd love to hear from you.
