About the role

Content Designer / Digital Content Consultant

Fully Remote | Outside IR35 | £350 per day | 3-Month Contract

The Opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced Content Designer / Digital Content Consultant to support a local authority with reviewing and improving its website, creating a modern, accessible and user-centred digital experience for residents.

You’ll assess existing website content, review user journeys and benchmark the digital experience against leading UK local authorities. Your goal will be to make information easier to find, improve usability and accessibility, and help residents complete more tasks online without needing to contact the authority directly.

This is a hands-on consultancy role for a content specialist who can combine strong content design principles, user-centred thinking and digital insight to deliver meaningful improvements.

You’ll also have the opportunity to leverage AI tools to support content auditing, improve consistency and identify opportunities to optimise the overall user experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of existing website content, structure and user journeys.
  • Benchmark the local authority’s website against leading UK local authorities and best-practice digital services.
  • Assess content quality, accessibility, usability and consistency.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to make content clearer, more accessible and resident-focused.
  • Optimise user journeys to help residents find information and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Use AI tools to support content audits, content improvement and user experience optimisation.
  • Identify opportunities to increase digital self-service and reduce avoidable customer contact.
  • Develop a practical, prioritised roadmap for ongoing website and content improvements.
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders to understand user needs, business requirements and service priorities.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience as a Content Designer, Digital Content Consultant or Content Specialist.
  • Experience reviewing, auditing and improving large-scale websites.
  • Strong understanding of user-centred content design and digital best practices.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility standards and inclusive content.
  • Experience improving digital user journeys and online self-service.
  • Ability to benchmark websites and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Experience using AI tools to support content design, auditing and optimisation.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, analytical and communication skills.
  • Experience working with local authorities or within the public sector would be advantageous.
