ABOUT QBYTE STUDIOSQByte Studios is an independent game studio based in Victoria, Australia. We're working on Nanites, a third-person action-builder survival game inspired by Fortnite: Save the World, Lethal Company, and Days Gone.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by nanotech, Nanites mixes story, action, and survival strategy. We’re a tight-knit team that values creativity, fun, and high-quality work.
Rold Overview:
We’re looking for a Head Level Designer to take the lead on world and level design for Nanites. You’ll be in charge of building the game’s world, managing level designers, and making sure everything feels fun, intense, and on-theme.
This is a contractor role with fully flexible hours and remote work—you can work anywhere, anytime, as long as the work is strong.
What you'll be doing:
- Lead the level design for Nanites
- Create engaging, well-paced levels that match our game world
- Work from early layout (blockouts) to final design
- Collaborate with art, design, and gameplay teams
- Give feedback and direction to junior designers
- Plan level flow, combat zones, and player movement
- Review playtest feedback and tweak things to improve
What we need:
- Strong experience designing levels in action or survival games
- Good knowledge of player flow, pacing, and gameplay balance
- Experience using Unreal Engine 5 (or similar)
- Ability to communicate your ideas clearly through docs or blockouts
- Leadership experience with a team or mentoring others
- A strong eye for fun, tension, and replayability
- Open to feedback, and willing to work collaboratively
- Willing to sign a contractor agreement (in progress of being made)Industry TransparencyWe understand concerns about unpaid work in the game industry and are committed to fairness and transparency:
- All contributors are independent contractors.
- We currently do not generate revenue, but contributors will be compensated based on the net revenue-sharing model once revenue is generated.Bonus (not required)
- Designed levels in post-apocalyptic or sci-fi settings
- Experience with multiplayer/co-op gameplay
- Comfortable with greyboxing/blockouts
- Love for survival, horror, or gritty games
- Want to build weird stuff like vertical slums or nanite-infested cavesOur interview Process:
