Freelance Geotechnical Engineer – Major Infrastructure & Tunnel ProjectsEurope (Remote) | 12‑Month Contract | Fully RemoteAbout the Role
We’re looking for an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to support the design, analysis and geotechnical risk management for a major European tunnelling and underground infrastructure project.
This role is fully remote and focuses on the technical design, geotechnical modelling, reporting and expert advisory required throughout the project lifecycle.
You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, design consultants and site personnel, providing continuous geotechnical expertise without the need for day‑to‑day site presence. The role covers geotechnical interpretation, numerical modelling, assessment of ground risks, tunnel support design reviews and remote monitoring oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret and analyse ground investigation data, including boreholes, lab results and geological models.
- Perform geotechnical calculations for tunnelling and underground works (settlement, stability, ground–structure interaction, retaining systems).
- Build and review numerical models (FEM/FDM) for soil–rock behaviour, tunnel deformation and ground movement.
- Support the design of temporary and permanent works, including excavation support and tunnel linings.
- Review and contribute to method statements for excavation, support installation, dewatering and ground improvement.
- Monitor and interpret instrumentation & monitoring data remotely (settlement markers, displacement, pore pressure, inclinometers).
- Prepare technical memos, design notes, reports and geotechnical risk assessments.
- Participate in remote coordination meetings with designers, contractors and client teams.
- Provide geotechnical advisory across design phases—feasibility, preliminary design and detailed design.
What You Bring
- At least 5 years of geotechnical engineering experience within tunnelling, underground works or heavy civil infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of soil & rock mechanics, ground behaviour and tunnel–ground interaction.
- Ability to deliver design support and risk assessments fully remotely.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with remote, multi‑discipline teams.
Technical & Software Skills
Experience with relevant geotechnical and design tools, such as:
- PLAXIS 2D/3D – FEM analysis
- GeoStudio Suite (Slope/W, SEEP/W, SIGMA/W)
- FLAC / FLAC3D – numerical modelling
- Rocscience (SLIDE, RS2/RS3)
- D‑Sheet Piling or equivalent retaining structure tools
- gINT / HoleBASE SI – borehole & GI data management
- AutoCAD / Civil 3D – design and drawing reviews
- Familiarity with BIM environments is an advantage
Contract Details
- 12‑month freelance contract
- Fully remote (no mandatory site visits)
- Start date: ASAP
- Extensions likely depending on project phase
