About QByte Studios

QByte Studios is an independent game studio based in Victoria, Australia. We’re currently working on Nanites, a third-person action-builder survival game inspired by Fortnite: Save the World, Lethal Company, and Days Gone.

Set in a gritty, post-apocalyptic world overrun by rogue nanotech, Nanites blends story, base-building, combat, and survival strategy. We’re a small, passionate team that values fun, innovation, and high-quality work.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a UI/UX Designer to help craft the look and feel of the player experience in Nanites. You’ll design clear, stylish, and immersive interfaces for gameplay, inventory, menus, and HUDs—all while ensuring they’re intuitive and satisfying to use.

This is a contractor role with fully flexible hours and remote work—you can work from anywhere, anytime, as long as the work is strong and progress is consistent.

What you'll be doing

  • Design and prototype game UI screens (HUD, menus, inventory, skill trees, etc.)
  • Define and document UI/UX standards for consistency
  • Collaborate with game designers, programmers, and artists to implement UI in Unreal Engine 5
  • Create user flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes
  • Use player feedback and playtesting to iterate and improve designs
  • Ensure UI supports gameplay clarity, accessibility, and thematic cohesion
  • Balance clean usability with immersive, gritty aesthetics

What we’re looking for

  • Strong visual design skills with a portfolio showing UI/UX work (games preferred)
  • Experience designing interfaces for PC and/or console games
  • Familiarity with Figma, Adobe XD, or similar tools
  • Good understanding of user-centered design principles
  • Experience working with Unreal Engine 5 (or willingness to learn UI implementation in it)
  • Self-motivated, good communicator, and team-oriented
  • Willing to sign a contractor agreement

Bonus if you have

  • Experience designing for survival or base-building games
  • Animation/motion graphics skills for dynamic UI elements
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards in games
  • Interest in post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, or horror genres
  • A love for gritty, functional, and immersive design language

Industry Transparency

We understand concerns about unpaid work in the game industry and are committed to fairness and transparency:

  • All contributors are independent contractors.
  • We currently do not generate revenue, but contributors will be compensated based on the net revenue-sharing model once revenue is generated.

Interview Process

We don’t do stiff interviews we jump in-game and talk while playing. Usually in Fortnite (BR or STW), though this may vary.

We want to see how you:

  • Think through interface and user flow problems
  • Communicate and collaborate with the team
  • Bring personality and humor to the vibe
  • Adapt quickly and take feedback well

Why join us?

  • Real experience on a gritty, stylized indie project
  • Design interfaces that players will rely on and love
  • Remote work with flexible hours
  • Ship a full game with a fun, driven team
  • Build a portfolio that shows your creative range

How to apply

Quick apply or email ceo@qbytestudios.com with:

  • A portfolio of relevant UI/UX work (Dribbble, Behance, GitHub, Google Drive, etc.)
  • A short intro about you and why Nanites caught your eye
  • Your experience, timezone, and availability
