Pay with Spire is rebuilding in-store payments around one idea: pay-by-bank should work as well as a card, cost merchants less, and put loyalty back in the merchant's hands. We're the only platform doing this at scale without forcing merchants to replace their existing checkout systems - and we're growing fast in fuel, convenience, and grocery, categories where transaction cost and loyalty economics matter most.
Pay with Spire is looking for a Senior Designer to own the design of the entire Spire experience - every place a consumer or merchant touches our pay-by-bank platform. This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role and the first dedicated design hire at Spire. There's no existing design practice to inherit - you'll build it, from consumer enrollment and our app and digital wallet, to the in-store and e-commerce moment of payment, to the merchant-facing portal.
If you want the freedom (and the responsibility) of setting up research and design from scratch, and you measure your work by whether it actually converts and retains real people, this role was built for you.
What you'll own:
- End-to-end design for the full Spire experience - enrollment, app, wallet, point of payment, and merchant portal
- Human-centered design as a practice: research, concept, prototype, validate - grounding design decisions in observed consumer and merchant behavior rather than assumption or legacy precedent
- The physical and digital experience as one continuous journey - pump, checkout lane, drive-thru, and in-store signage alongside app digital wallet, and web surfaces that carry the payment
- Enrollment conversion as a standing design priority, with in-market results to prove impact
- Consumer and merchant research - interviews, usability testing, journey mapping, in-store observation and translate findings into prioritized, actionable design recommendations
- Spire's design system, component library, and design standards, built to scale across many merchant brands
- Present and defend design decisions to executives, merchants, and partners with clear rationale tied to business outcomes
- Partner with Marketing on consumer-facing campaign and Smart Messaging creative so the in-product and out-of-product experience stay coherent
- Support new merchant launches with design input on first-run experience, in-store materials, and readiness
What you bring:
- 10+ years designing consumer and business-facing digital products, with a portfolio showing end-to-end ownership from research through shipped experience
- A deep human-centered design practice grounded in research and evidence-based iteration
- Experience designing high-volume consumer flows where conversion or adoption was the measured outcome
- Strong interaction and visual design craft across mobile, web, and responsive surfaces
- Experience building or owning a design system and component library
- The independence to set priorities and establish a practice where none exists today
- Proficiency in Figma or an equivalent modern design/prototyping tool
- A portfolio with case studies showing the problem, the process, and the measured outcome
Nice to have: payments, fintech, banking, or digital wallet design experience; experience designing for physical retail environments (fuel, convenience, QSR, grocery); experience with white-label or multi-brand products; accessibility expertise and WCAG familiarity; experience designing around regulated-product constraints like consent, disclosures, and identity verification.
Requirements: If not based in Dallas, regular travel to Dallas office is required, and ability to travel regularly for team events, partner meetings, merchant visits, and industry conferences. This role needs to be visibly and deeply engaged with the business.
What we offer:
- Competitive base salary, commensurate with experience
- Equity participation
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- Discretionary PTO and 401(k)
