Freelance Character Designer

A collectible figurine series inspired by global mythology and folklore is in development and requires a skilled character designer to bring the concept to life. The collection will feature 10–12 stylized “spooky-cute” figures, including legendary beings such as a Japanese Kitsune, a Scottish Brownie, an African Lightning Bird, and a Mesopotamian wind spirit. The aim is to create playful yet detailed designs that translate seamlessly into collectible figurines. This is a single freelance project, with the possibility of ongoing collaborations on future collections, and is expected to be completed within four weeks.

Responsibilities

• Design 10–12 character concepts based on mythological and folkloric creatures.
• Develop figures in a whimsical, spooky-cute style suitable for collectible figurines.
• Provide turnarounds, sketches, and polished artwork ready for toy/figurine adaptation.
• Collaborate on refining visual direction to ensure designs align with both mythology and toy design considerations.
• Adapt complex mythological themes into accessible, stylized characters while preserving cultural authenticity.
• Deliver final assets on time and in formats optimized for figurine production.

Skills and Requirements

• Strong portfolio demonstrating character design for collectibles, toys, or stylized figurines.
• Experience translating 2D character concepts into 3D-friendly designs.
• Ability to balance mythological accuracy with playful artistic interpretation.
• Proficiency in digital illustration tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate.
• Knowledge of toy design principles (turnarounds, proportion control, production considerations).
• Creativity in developing a cohesive collection with consistent style and appeal.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to deliver within a four-week project timeline.
• Prior experience with mythology- or folklore-inspired projects is a strong advantage.
